ABOUT THE BOOK
America has spent decades expanding government in an effort to solve its most persistent socioeconomic problems. Yet housing has become less affordable, healthcare costs continue to rise, education remains burdened by bureaucracy, welfare programs have expanded, inflation has eroded purchasing power, and the national debt continues to grow.
Chasing Utopia argues that the answer is not more government, but less of it.
The book begins with the history of socialism around the world and its development in the United States before examining income inequality, housing, healthcare, education, welfare, inflation, and the national deficit.
Each chapter follows the same approach. It begins with the background of the issue, examines what can be learned from other countries, develops what a capitalist solution could look like, and concludes with a legislative proposal for how that solution could be implemented in the United States.
The argument throughout is simple: government is inherently inefficient and should be limited to the functions the free market cannot reasonably provide on its own. Where competition, private enterprise, and individual choice can provide a better solution, government should step aside.
Chasing Utopia makes the case that America must reverse its growing reliance on socialist policies and return to a system that places greater trust in markets, individual liberty, and personal responsibility.
SEVEN ISSUES. ONE APPROACH.
Income Inequality • Housing • Healthcare • Education • Welfare • Inflation • National Debt
Each issue moves from its history and lessons from other countries to a free-market alternative and a specific legislative proposal.
WHY I WROTE IT
America doesn’t lack people willing to point out its problems. We have no shortage of politicians, commentators, academics, and activists telling us what's wrong. Our paths diverge at what comes next.
I wrote Chasing Utopia because I wanted to take the argument further. If government intervention has failed, what replaces it? If free markets offer a better alternative, what does that actually look like? And how do we turn those principles into policy?
This book is my attempt to answer those questions.
